With Summer just around the corner, that only means one thing… It’s nearly BBQ season! This means a lot of family time! Whether you are just throwing some chicken on the grill for a quick midweek dinner or hosting a big family party, BBQ’s should be a fun-filled, enjoyable time. However, if you have a food allergy and/or intolerance this can make things a little bit trickier!
We have put together our Top Tips to ensure that your BBQ doesn’t end up with a trip to ER:
1. Clean your BBQ thoroughly
The first thing to consider before you start barbecuing is to make sure you have cleaned all residue from your grill. This is to make sure any potential food allergens that have been cooked on the grill in the past has been wiped away. Remember to also clean the BBQ lid as it may have residue on it which might drip onto cooking food.
2. BYO
If you are visiting a friends or family for dinner and are worried that they may not take the same precautions as you, don’t worry, you still have options. You can bring your own food, don’t be embarrassed. Just let the host know beforehand, they won’t mind – they will want to help and accommodate you.
3. Always read the label
Consider the seasonings and sauces that are used to marinate your choice of meat. A lot of marinades contain hidden allergens, so always make sure you read the label carefully. If any look suspicious, here’s a tip: securely wrap your portion of the food in tin foil to prevent cross-contamination.
4. Inform the host
If you are visiting a friends or family’s house for a summer BBQ, make sure you let the host know of any food intolerances or food allergy that you may have. No-one wants their party to end in one of their guests having to take a trip to ER.
5. Know your limits
If you have a food intolerance or food allergy but can still tolerate a small amount of the culprit food, make sure you don’t overindulge. You will only regret it later.
Another way to ensure you avoid any problems is to eat before you go. Then, at the party, all you need to worry about is enjoying an ice-cold beverage!
